So in order for the printer to function from (at least) Mac OS X systems, you need make sure that it allows SNMP GET/SET via the "public" community. It turns out that if you disable the 'public' READ/WRITE SNMP community (or your netowrk blocks random SNMP) the printer can't scan/fax and the stupid HP Utility can't even talk to it.
